Rebecca Call Gorham

Rebecca Call was born to Caleb Vall  (1718-1780) and Rebecca Stimpson on May 14th, 1774.  Her father was a baker  in Charlestown, Massachusetts.  Rebecca was one of thirteen siblings.  

In 1759 Nathaniel Gorham opened a merchant house in Charlestown and began to court Rebecca in 1761.  They were married on September 6th, 1761.  Together they had nine children, with the first being born only a month after their marriage.  Seven of the children, including first born Nathaniel lived until adulthood with a daughter marrying Charles Francis Adams, son of future President John Quincy Adams.

In 1786, Nathaniel Gorham was elected President of the United States in Congress Assembled.  The following year he was a served as a delegate to the Constitutional Convention and is a signer of the Constitution of 1787.  After the enactment of the Constitution in 1789, Gorham retired from politics and began to invest imprudently in western and southern  large tracts of land.  The couple went bankrupt and in 1795 Nathaniel Gorham  died of a stroke.  Rebecca died 16 years later on November 18, 1812 in Charlestown, Massachusetts.  She was interred with her husband at in the Phipps Street Cemetery in Charlestown, Massachusetts.
